Young marble giants greeted the sailor from Cape Sounion as he entered the home stretch to Athens. Two basic institutions of Greek art -- tensed vitality and geometric structuring -- are as yet disunited: the sculptor partly carves, partly maps and abstract concept of human form onto the rectangular block.
